Sustainability at Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlservice

Climate and environmental protection is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and has a major impact on our business activities – now and in the future. Our customers are also increasingly making environmentally friendly purchasing decisions in order to reduce CO2 emissions and increase the sustainability of their products and services.

However, in order to build sustainable and transparent supply chains, it is important to know what CO2 emissions the individual products cause. The product carbon footprint (PCF) is a reliable indicator for this. With our PCF calculation, we can determine the individual PCF for almost any of our products.

Strategy model

Our sustainability strategy is derived directly from the Group strategy "Salzgitter AG 2030". It expands on the strategic directions set out in this strategy and anchors environmental, social and corporate sustainability firmly in all areas of our value creation process.

Six central focus areas bring together the key sustainability challenges facing Salzgitter AG and define the priorities for our continuous development.

Green Steel

On the way to green steel

Steel manufacturers around the world are looking for innovative solutions to reduce CO2 emissions. Manufacturers concentrating on the electrosteel route rely on the scrap being sorted into and delivered in the most homogeneous fractions possible for their steel production.

This production method therefore limits the quantities and variety of grades. Salzgitter AG employs DRI technology to produce sponge iron, using gas or hydrogen to overcome this bottleneck. When sufficient hydrogen is available on day x, this production route can save up to 95% CO2 compared to the current blast furnace route.

SALCOS®

Green steel from the Salzgitter Group

Our latest best-practice example in the field of sustainability and climate protection: the Salzgitter SALCOS® project. SALCOS® (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) is the outstanding result of scientific research and development and is revolutionising steel production. For the first time, it should be possible to reduce CO2 emissions in steel production by up to 95%.

A quantum leap, made by Salzgitter!

Sustainable solutions – recognisable at a glance

The results of our sustainability endeavours are reflected in our products in particular. To ensure maximum transparency and traceability, we rely on the Salzgitter Group's "OUR Sustainable Solutions" labelling system. This system enables you to quickly and transparently record sustainable features of products and services (e.g. significant CO2 reduction or hydrogen-based steel production) throughout the Group.

In addition to the visual labelling, you will always receive further explanations and evidence (e.g. reference values or a PCF) as to why your product or service has been given this label. For our responsibility, your value chain and a more sustainable industry.

Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlservice offers slit strips and sheets. These encompass a wide range of grades and dimensions. Please contact us for further information.

PCF calculation

Calculation for environmentally friendly purchasing decisions

The product carbon footprint (PCF) records all of a product's CO2 emissions along the entire supply chain – from raw material extraction and production to processing, storage and transport to the customer's factory gate (cradle to customer entry gate). All greenhouse gases are included and converted into CO2 equivalents (CO2e).

Using the PCF tool we have developed, we can calculate these CO2 emissions for almost all of our products. This applies to both reduced-CO2 and conventionally produced steel products from Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlservice's comprehensive range.

Circularity

Sustainable circular economy – every step counts

Under the umbrella of the new Group strategy, collaborations are being forged on an industrial scale to establish the principles of the circular economy. But also in the day-to-day work of product developers and managers, innovative ideas and solutions contribute towards the achievement of the Group's goals. The cycle of resources not only includes the world's recycling champion, steel, which will also be produced using hydrogen and green electricity in the future.

01 Reduce

Reduce – we want to become even more conscious in our use of finite resources and thus minimise their use in the economic cycle.

02 Reuse

Reuse – we want to keep resources that have been extracted from nature in economic use for as long as possible.

03 Recycle

Recycle – we want to reuse raw materials from products that have already been used in order to save resources.

04 Rethink

Rethink – we are questioning our habits and processes and are going to develop a sustainable industrial organisational structure.

Closed Loop

Systematic closed-loop recycling management

Sustainable processes help to protect the climate and ensure long-term competitiveness. Together with our customers, we are developing future-proof concepts along the entire value chain. Our aim is to transform traditional processes into innovative, efficient and closed loops. This will result in a consistent reduction of waste, emissions, and material and energy losses in future.
